In the end, Emil left us days after his third birthday. I was penning the original Korean edition of Youngho and Chadori, Book I at the time and, without doubt, Youngho’s grief after losing Chadori in the novel mirrors my own anguish and despair. To others, Emil was just a cute dog. To us, however, he was our only child. We suffered silently, and I fell into depression.
Then, Oscar saved us.

After Emil passed on, we felt that we weren’t ready for another dog yet, but my husband and I faced a tough decision. The farm where we’d adopted Emil just had newborn puppies at the time. If we wanted the same breed as Emil – which we did – we had to reserve a puppy right then. Otherwise, by the time we were finally ready for another dog, we might have had to wait several years for a puppy.
We returned to the farm to pick up Oscar – he was just nine weeks old then. Remembering Emil’s first day and how scared he’d been, I had my phone ready to film Oscar’s first day as we entered the house. To our surprise, though, Oscar was not scared at all! He strolled in, ate, drank, and hopped down the stairs to the garden to do a wee, and came back in. Oscar fitted in the family from day one as if he’d always been there. Now he is already eight and a half. How time flies!
When I began writing the Youngho and Chadori series, Chadori’s original inspiration was undoubtedly Victor. However, he inevitably grew to include a little bit of Emil here and a little bit of Oscar there. It was Victor who inspired Chadori’s unusually large size for the breed, but almost all the illustrations in Book I are based on Emil. The drawing of Chadori at the end of Book I was modelled on Oscar as seen from behind while he eats. Oscar also has the most freckles of the three. That unusual sprawling pose of theirs – belly on the floor with hind legs stretched out – must be common in the breed. My husband and I call this the ’yoga pose’.
And all three dogs share a phenomenal capacity for farting!
Working on Book II, the traits of these three remarkable dogs are proving to be useful in developing the story. I’m certainly having a blast writing it. When it’s finally published, I hope you’ll enjoy reading it just as much!
그러다가 결국 에밀이 3살 되는 생일을 맞은 얼마 후에 급속히 악화되어 결국 세상을 떠났다. 한창 『영호와 차도리』 시리즈의 시작인 한국어판 집필에 열중하고 있었을 때이다. 그때 에밀을 잃은 상실의 아픔으로 책 속에서 영호가 차도리를 잃고 겪는 슬픔도 더더욱 생생해졌던 것 같다. 타인들에게는 그저 ‘개 한 마리’에 불과했을지 모르겠지만 나에게 있어서 에밀은 유일한 자식과 같은 존재였다. 당시 나는 주위 사람들도 이해할 수 없을 정도로 절망했고 모든 것을 포기해버리고 싶었다. 누가 들으면 ‘터무니없는 소리 한다’며 질책할지 모르겠지만, 내 자신이 뇌종양 선고를 받고 삶과 죽음의 기로 앞에 놓였을 때는 오히려 담담한 마음이었던 것 같다.
그때 나를 살린 것이 오스카이다.

에밀을 보내고 새로운 개에게 정을 줄 준비가 되어 있지 않았던 나에게, 남편은 지금 에밀을 데려온 농장에서 강아지를 예약하지 않으면 몇 년을 더 기다려야 할지도 모른다고 했다. 하는 수 없이 강아지를 예약하고, 다시 직접 가서 데리고 왔다. 그러니까 오스카가 9주 되던 때였다.
이전 에밀을 데리고 오던 첫 날, 8주 된 강아지였던 에밀이 집에 들어서자마자 주위를 둘러보고는 온몸을 사시나무 떨듯 부들부들 떨던 모습이 생각나서, 오스카는 아예 비디오를 찍어 놓으려고 집에 들어서면서 휴대폰을 대기하고 기다렸다. 그런데 웬걸, 오스카는 아무렇지도 않게 쫄랑쫄랑 들어가더니, 혹시나 하고 준비해 놓은 밥을 싹싹 먹어 치우고, 물도 마시고, 혼자 정원으로 가는 계단을 뛰어 내려가 오줌까지 누고 다시 들어왔다.
첫날부터 너무나도 씩씩하던 오스카. 하지만 에밀을 너무도 일찍 보낸 상처가 아직 아물지 않았던 나는 쉽게 정을 주지 못했다. 오스카는 그런 나를 하루 종일 졸졸 따라다니며 재롱을 피웠다. 사랑을 주지 않을 수가 없었다. 또 휠체어가 내 몸의 일부라고 생각했는지, 항상 휠체어 밑에 들어가 바퀴에 몸을 기대고 잠이 들었다. 철없는 오스카가 다가오면, 혹시나 휠체어에 깔려 다치지나 않을까 싶어 당장 브레이크를 걸고 마냥 기다리던 것이 생각난다. 그렇게 둘이 함께 졸았던 것도 한두 번이 아니다. 그러다 이갈이를 하고, 청소년기 반항견(?) 시절을 보내고 … 마치 자식 키우는 것처럼 일거수일투족을 함께하다 보니 이제 벌써 8살 반이다. 어느덧 듬직한 성견이 되어 오히려 엄마 아빠를 돌본다. 하지만 어떤 면에서는 아직도 철없는 강아지 같다.
『영호와 차도리』 시리즈를 집필하며, 차도리의 시작은 단연 빅토르였지만, 그 이후로는 에밀의 모습이, 또 오스카의 특징이 자연스럽게 들어가게 되었다. 차도리가 같은 품종의 다른 개들보다 유난히도 몸집이 크고 훈련이 잘된 것은 빅토르에게서 따온 것이다. 삽화를 그릴 즈음에는 에밀의 모습이 나에게 영감이 되어 주었고, 온몸에 주근깨가 유난히 많고 심지어 배에까지 있는 것은 오스카이다. 바닥에 엎드릴 때 뒷다리를 쫙 펴고 눕는 것은 품종의 특징인지 세 마리가 모두 똑같다.
방귀냄새가 유난히 지독한 것도 세 마리의 공통점이다.
현재 집필 중인 제2권에서는 이 세마리 개의 특징들이 이야기의 전개를 아끄는 촉진제가 될 것이다.
