This is a brief summary of the real-life dogs that became the inspiration behind Chadori, whose character did not exist in the first conception of the Youngho and Chadori series. Even the first provisional title was the profoundly cheesy My Korean Santa (ooh, how it hurts to admit this!). Long story short, I included a Welsh Springer Spaniel as Youngho’s companion dog in memory of Victor, a family dog who had just died and who had been with my parents-in-law for many years. My husband and I then had a dog of our own, Emil (also a Welshie), who tragically perished shortly after his third birthday due to a congenital kidney disease. After losing him, I was consumed by anger and grief, and buried myself in writing, which is my refuge whenever I feel lost – be it diaries, essays, songs, poetry… and now a fantasy book. Anyhow, that is perhaps why Youngho’s despair after losing Chadori in the novel became a little too vivid. After Emil, we adopted Oscar. He is 8 years old now already – mature and dependable half of the time, yet still very much like a puppy at others.

I realise I have so much to say now that I have broached the topic of my beloved dogs. I will continue to write more about them in small instalments.

차도리의 시작은 이렇다. 어느 날 시부모님이 지극히 아끼시던 반려견 빅토르가 세상을 떠나게 되었다. 시부모님을 방문할 때마다 늘 함께하던 듬직한 빅토르. 온 가족에게 사랑받던 애견이었다. 한참 『영호와 차도리 제1권: 영혼의 세계로 가는 문』을 집필하고 있던 나는 빅토르의 기억을 기리고 싶은 마음에서 영호의 반려견을, 그러니까 빅토르와 같은 종인 웰쉬 스프링어 스패니얼을 추가하게 되었다. 차도리의 특징 대부분도 빅토르에게서 따온 것이다. 처음에는 차도리의 캐릭터 자체가 존재하지 않았던 것이다. 할아버지와 영호가 유일한 주인공이었고, 임시 제목도 아주 엉뚱하다 못해 창피한 ‘산타는 한국인’이었다. 그 후 시어머니가 다시 반려견을 원하셨으나, 빅토르 산책을 비가 오나 눈이 오나 아침저녁으로 도맡아 하시던 시아버지께서 반대하셨다. 중형견을 나날이 산책시킨다는 것은 생각처럼 언제나 쉽고 즐거운 일만은 아니다. 결국은 낙심하시는 시어머니를 위해서 남편과 내가 같은 종의 개를 기르며 종종 시부모님과 시간을 보내도록 하기로 했다. 그래서 우리와 함께하게 된 웰쉬 반려견 2세가 에밀이다. 초기에는 시부모님을 위해서 대신 기른다는 명목으로 시작했으나, 자식이 없는 우리는 곧 에밀을 친아들처럼 아끼게 되었다. 그러다가 청천벽력 같은 일이 생겨났다. 막 강아지 시기를 벗어나고 성견이 된 에밀이 겨우 3살 생일을 넘기고 선천성 신장염으로 세상을 떠나게 된 것이다. 에밀을 보내고 세상에 분노하며 오열하던 나에게 소설 집필은 일종의 분출구가 되어 주었다. 그래서 본의 아니게 소설 속에서 차도리가 세상을 떠난 후 영호의 슬픔이 좀 지나치게 생생해졌나 보다. 그리고 에밀 이후 제3세가 지금의 오스카. 벌써 8살이지만 아직도 언제나 철없는 강아지 같다. 모두가 웰쉬 스프링어 스패니얼종이라 겉보기는 비슷하지만 각자의 성격이 너무도 특이하다.

사랑하는 개들에 대해 일단 적다 보니 할 말이 너무 많다. 앞으로도 종종 연재처럼 올리고자 한다.
