⚠️ Important! I am not an expert  in any of the following topics. My knowledge in the areas covered here is mostly limited to the scope of the story. Should you wish to add further information, correct misinformation, or simply say hi, please do so by leaving a comment!

1. (Easy–Intermediate) How many characters do you see in the second illustration in the Prologue (0-2 Dogs in the Sky)?

A total of twelve characters from Book I appear in this illustration. The number happens to coincide with Youngho’s age and also the month in which the story takes place — December, the twelfth month of the year.

First of all, nine dogs, including Chadori, are flying through the sky, pulling a sleigh in which Youngho and Grandad are riding. If you look closely behind them, you’ll spot a green monster chasing them. And yes, all nine dogs will feature as characters with their own names and unique personalities in Book II!

9 + 2 + 1 = 12

If you counted fifteen, though, you’re also right.

12 + 3 = 15

You’ll also find the moon, an octopus, and a turtle in the background. Which of these will return in Book II? Well, I’m still working on it, so nothing has been finalised yet. What do you think?

2. (Intermediate) In Chapter 1, who is not paying attention to the class? What are they doing instead? (Hint: You have to read the book and look in the illustrations!)

The two naughty ones not paying attention to their class are Youngho and Manu.

Chapter 1 begins as Mrs Park catches Youngho dozing in class. If you look closely at the books on the desks, you’ll see that Youngho’s and Manu’s are not the same as their classmates’. Manu is the one in a green top, sitting at the back on the right. He looks like he is enjoying a snack. Manu certainly is fond of eating, isn’t he? Hope you don’t behave like these two in class. 😄

3. (Intermediate) In Chapter 1, Youngho names Peking Duck tacos as one of his favorite dishes that Manu’s mother made for him. How is Peking Duck usually served? (Hint: How would a chef serve it?)

A seasoned whole duck is roasted until the skin is crispy while the meat is still moist. It is then thinly sliced and packed in pancakes spread with Hoisin sauce, together with an assortment of vegetables, such as leek and cucumber, cut into fine julienne strips. At the end of Chapter 1, it is mentioned that “Manu’s mother used to be a chef”, so this is how a chef would serve it.

But Youngho tasted Peking Duck for the first time at Manu’s house. He doesn’t know that it is traditionally served in this way, and calls it “Peking Duck tacos”.

* I am really not an expert in this area, and my experience of Peking Duck is largely limited to Chinese or Asian restaurants in Europe!

4. (Intermediate) In Chapter 2, what are the things that Youngho has never heard of before? Can you explain what they are? (Hint: You have to read the story!)

In Chapter 2, we learn of two things that Youngho has never heard of before:

boysenberries and champagne.

  • Boysenberry: Youngho wonders whether it could mean “boys in a berry” or “boys and berries” as the name suggests. He never learns what it is in the book. But you, my readers, can read about it here: a boysenberry is a cross between a blackberry and several other varieties of berries.
  • Champagne: As many of you already know, it is a type of sparkling wine from the French region of the same name. Youngho has never heard of it before (I hadn’t when I was twelve!) and thinks to himself incredulously, “Sham pain”, though? Never heard of it. Could “pain” be the name for something that looks so delightful? Seriously?

5. (Advanced) There are two objects — a hammer and a saw — hidden in one of the illustrations. Can you find them? (Hint: It’s in the book!)

It is literally “in the book” up in the air inside Illustration 3-1 The Crown of Upturned Bucket.

If you look closely, the figures and drawings in it are falling off the open pages. You will also see tools, including a hammer and a saw, next to the person falling upside down at the bottom.

6. (Completely geeky) In the illustration in Chapter 4 (4-1 Once upon a Time on Christmas Day), one tiny detail does not correspond to reality. What is it? (Hint: An astronomer may find this easy!)

It’s the waning moon outside the kitchen window. A waning moon reaches that height only in the early morning in the northern hemisphere, apparently. Youngho and Chadori live in Korea, which is in the northern hemisphere. Therefore, the moon in this illustration does not correspond to reality.

This illustration depicts how Youngho remembers one Christmas Day when he was seven years old. Both Youngho and his elder sister, Minji, are under ten in that scene, and they would have been in bed by the time the crescent moon rose that high in the sky. It is highly unlikely that a family with two young children would have dinner in the small hours. Moreover, it would no longer be Christmas.

By contrast, the presence of a crescent moon visible through Youngho’s window in Illustration 11-1 Youngho’s Brain Turns a Cartwheel  is quite likely, as this happens in the early morning when Youngho would normally be asleep.

7. (For the culturally savvy) In the first illustration in Chapter 8 (8-1 The Time Millionaires), what is the significant number? Why is it used in this context?

The significant number here is four. If you look inside the thought bubble, you’ll see that all the coins and notes (“bills” for our American friends) have a clock drawn on them, and the hands of the timepieces all point to four o’clock. There are also four birds: one in the upper left corner and three on the right.

Number four is the number of death in East Asian countries — China, Japan, and Korea (in alphabetical order). This is because the word ‘four’ sounds like, or the same as, the word “death” in their languages.

The fear of the number four is called tetraphobia.

8. (Intermediate) In the third illustration in Chapter 8 (8-3 Where to Celebrate Christmas This Year?), I forgot to add something to the picture. What can it be? (Hint: You have to read the book and look in the illustration!)

The napkins, of course! At the end of Chapter 8, Minji crumples up a paper napkin and throws it at Dad. Yet there are no napkins to be seen in the illustration. While drawing this one, I was so focused on setting the table — the meat, vegetables, rice, side dishes, cutlery… I was having fun playing house! At the same time, I was completely oblivious to the napkins. Just when I thought everything was looking good, I realised that I’d forgotten the napkins. Correct it again? Nah, I thought, it’ll make a nice question for the quiz! 🙂

9. (An open question) In the first illustration in Chapter 10 (10-1 Singing Sheep, Fast Cars, and Dancing Ducklings), who’s the diva in your opinion? Remember — there are no right or wrong answers!

Everybody is a diva here in my opinion.

*You might wonder why the answer in Korean is much longer. I’m simply explaining to Korean readers that diva, a word of Italian origin meaning a “successful female opera singer”, can refer to both men and women in modern usage, such as “a glamorous star” or “someone who is highly demanding and difficult to please”.

10. (Intermediate) In the first illustration in Chapter 11 (11-1 Youngho’s Brain Turns a Cartwheel), how many visitors does Youngho have? Who are they?

Youngho has two visitors in the room – Grandad and Chadori. We can clearly see Grandad standing with his back towards the reader. Chadori is almost hidden behind him, but we can still catch a glimpse of his duster tail in motion.

  • 보이젠베리: 영호는 보이젠베리가 이름 그대로 ‘열매에 담근 소년(boys in a berry)’인지, 아니면 ‘소년과 열매(boys and berries)’인지 궁금해 하죠.
